Erskine Thinks Free Agency in Sports Is ‘Disaster’?

First published in the July 21 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

Chris Erskine’s clever, humorous, heartfelt column is a tremendous addition to our local newspaper. Kudos to those who made this happen!
However, I have a bone to pick with Chris if he’s serious that free agency in professional sports has been a “disaster.” Professional athletes are elite performers, whose playing careers span precious few years. Why begrudge these athletes the same freedom to select employers that we enjoy? The alternative is indentured servitude. Why begrudge them their earnings? The alternative is billionaire owners collecting extra cash.
Chris is a funny guy; perhaps, he was pulling our collective leg and I’m too daft to get the joke. I look forward to reading his column for years to come, perhaps hiking with him, and certainly soliciting his gin-drinking tips.
