Keep Mayor’s Park Open for Mixed Use

First published in the Aug. 18 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

I am writing in support of keeping Mayor’s Discovery Park open as a public park. While I understand plans are underway to convert it to a pickleball venue, I think much will be lost for the general public if no space is dedicated for public park use. I have hosted numerous birthday parties for my son there, as it is always a reliably shady and peaceful place. We will miss it dearly if it goes or is drastically transformed. While I understand the decision was made in part due to “underuse” of the park, I believe part of the appeal of Mayor’s Discovery Park is that it serves as a little oasis for families and park goers who appreciate the respite from busier parks. It is a cozy nook, a space to unplug. A very special place.
I have met many people there who see it the same way and, in fact, were informed of the plans to convert the park, by a family who was at the park while my son and I were there.
I have often seen folks exercising there, having lunch, or just hanging out with their kids, so it definitely gets some use.
While I understand pickleball courts are in popular demand right now, I believe many families would be at a loss without this enchanting park space. Perhaps instead of converting it to a single use space, the city could instead consider revamping of the park to benefit the community it has been serving for years and to welcome new folks who come to discover this hidden treasure.
