BSA Troop 501 Takes On the Inyo National Forest

The boys and girls of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 501 in La Cañada Flintridge recently put their winter survival skills to the test in Inyo National Forest.
They spent many weeks before the trip learning about winter survival skills in preparation for the trip and were able to use those skills to make the trip an overwhelming success.
The scouts donned snowshoes and backpacked through the snow to an area near the base of Obsidian Dome, where they built snow caves, known as “quinzhees,” for shelter.
The scouts spent the night in the snow caves before heading out the following day. Additionally, the troop received valuable guidance and direction from mountain guide Doug Nidever, who is based in Inyo County and has been serving as a mountain guide since 1978.
