Spartans Crush California, Lose to Saugus

The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ lacrosse team triumphed with a 12-3 blowout over visiting California High of Whittier in a nonleague game last Wednesday.
The Spartans survived the rainy conditions, scoring 10 of their goals and holding California to just one in the first half.
LCHS boasted six different scorers throughout the game with junior Mia Louie and sophomore Maddie McClure leading with three goals each while combining for three assists. Freshman Rachel Herrick scored two goals while senior Bianca Cugno, sophomore Irelyn Fung and freshman Lucy Kim each scored once. Cugno led in assists with four while junior Kate Nappi and freshman Maddy Logelin were each credited with an assist.
Junior Chloe Shirvanian and freshman Olivia Baker contributed solid minutes on attack. Freshman goalie Gretchen Louie stopped eight shots on goal while both junior Annabelle Fung and sophomore Chloe Lee had strong defensive showings.
The Spartans lost to visiting Saugus, 14-4, last Friday. McClure and Irelyn Fung each scored twice for LCHS while teammates Mia Louie and Logelin each registered an assist. Sophomore Olivia Laughon drew her first 8-meter shot of the season and Kim and Baker made notable plays in the attack zone.
Goalie Gretchen Louie stopped 55 percent of the 31 shots she faced in the cage. Meanwhile, sophomore Darlene Perez also demonstrated solid defensive play.
La Cañada (2-7-1 overall) will host Glendale for its Pacific League opener on Wednesday, April 12, at 4:30 p.m. before visiting powerhouse Crescenta Valley on April 14.
