Lanterman House to Offer Summer Internship Program

The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation is inviting local high school students to apply for its annual summer internship program.
The four-week program will meet at the Lanterman House and is open to students in grades 10 through 12 interested in learning about and preserving local history. This year, the internship program will meet entirely in person.
“We’ve changed the structure of the program this year,” said Mary Lou Langedyke, director of the Summer Internship Program. “Since we are meeting in person, we want the students to be able to utilize the wonderful archival collections of the Lanterman House.”
Interns will focus on the historic collection of local newspapers preserved in the Lanterman House archives. They will create an online exhibition on the history of the Outlook Valley Sun newspaper, conduct a joint oral history interview, and write an article to be published in a Lanterman House publication. They will receive training in research methods, interview techniques, preservation, and legal and ethical guidelines facing archives.
“We’re excited to work with our intern class this summer,” said Laura Verlaque, executive director of the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation. “We’re lining up guest speakers and planning a lot of collaborative activities.”
Twenty-seven local students have successfully completed the Lanterman House summer internship program since it was launched in 2020.
Mary Lou Langedyke, president of the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation Board and retired La Cañada High School history teacher, will direct the Summer Internship Program, with support from Verlaque and Julie Yamashita, Lanterman House archivist.
Students who attend a local high school or who live in the Crescenta-Cañada Valley are eligible to apply. They must fill out a short application and submit a recommendation. Application and recommendation forms can be found on the Lanterman House website at lantermanhouse.org.
Applications are due by May 14 and the program begins on June 6.

First published in the April 27 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.
