Spartans Loses Season Finale at San Marino

The La Cañada High School varsity boys’ volleyball team lost at San Marino, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 15-13, in its regular-season finale last Thursday. The Spartans defeated visiting Temple City, 25-22, 30-28, 22-25, 25-22, in a Rio Hondo League match last Tuesday.
LCHS previously competed in the Crescenta Valley Tournament and finished with a 2-4 record. The Spartans collected victories against Gabrielino High of San Gabriel, 25-12, 25-23; and Simi Valley, 26-24, 17-25, 15-9; but lost to Thousand Oaks, 25-19, 25-18; Gabrielino High, 25-16, 25-18; Crescenta Valley High of La Crescenta, 25-14, 25-18; and Eagle Rock High of Los Angeles, 22-25, 25-17, 15-12. Individual statistics were not reported to the Outlook Valley Sun.
La Cañada, which finished the regular season third in league with a 4-4 record (13-19 overall), will visit San Marcos High in Santa Barbara (26-7) for its CIF-Southern Section Division II first-round opener today at 6 p.m. If victorious, the Spartans would advance to the second round and meet either Valley Christian High of Cerritos (9-8) or Canyon High of Anaheim (18-3) on Saturday, April 29.

The Golden Knights concluded the regular season by competing in the Redondo Union/Mira Costa Mike Cook Classic last weekend and finished with a 4-2 record.
SFHS swept Coronado High of Henderson, Nevada, 25-20, 25-21, in its tournament finale last Saturday as senior captain Gabe Metcalf registered 20 assists, two digs and one block. Junior Titus Rodz tallied eight kills, two assists and one block, sophomore Ryan Bender recorded seven kills, three blocks, two digs, one ace and one assist, and senior Travis Brown finished with six kills, one ace, one block and one dig. Junior Will Martinez produced three kills and two blocks, senior captain James Clapp collected four blocks, two kills and two digs, and senior Trevor Shackleton had three digs and one ace.
The Golden Knights defeated Capistrano Valley Christian High of San Juan Capistrano, 20-25, 25-17, 15-9, in a tournament match last Saturday as Metcalf racked up 24 assists, seven digs, two blocks and one kill. Brown registered nine kills, one dig and one assist while Martinez tallied seven kills, one block, one dig and one assist. Bender had six kills, four blocks, two digs and one assist while Rodz recorded eight digs, six kills and one assist. Shackleton produced eight digs and two assists, Clapp finished with three digs, two kills and one block, and seniors Drew Miller and Aidan Joel Lopez each had one ace and one dig.
St. Francis swept San Dieguito Academy of Encinitas, 25-17, 25-22, to open the second day of tournament action last Saturday as Metcalf collected 17 assists, seven digs, three kills and one block. Bender tallied five kills, three blocks and one ace while Rodz recorded five kills, two digs and one ace. Martinez had four kills, three blocks and one dig while Clapp finished with four kills, two blocks, one ace and one assist. Brown produced three kills, one block, one dig and one assist, Miller registered five digs, two assists, one kill and one ace, and Joel Lopez had one dig.

Metcalf recorded 18 assists and four digs, Martinez produced eight kills and two digs, and Rodz tallied six kills, three digs and one assist. Clapp had four kills, one assist, one dig and one ace, Bender finished with three kills and one block, and Brown registered three kills. Miller collected six digs and two assists, sophomore Matt Polenzani and Shackleton each made two digs, and Joel Lopez had one dig.

Metcalf registered 17 assists, six digs, two kills and one block while Bender tallied seven kills, two blocks, one ace, one dig and one assist. Rodz produced five kills, two digs and one ace, Clapp had five digs, two blocks and one assist, and Martinez collected four kills and two blocks. Brown recorded three kills, one block, one dig and one assist, Miller finished with four digs, two assists and one ace, and Joel Lopez had one dig.
The Golden Knights lost to Redondo Union High of Redondo Beach, 29-27, 25-22, in their tournament opener last Friday..
St. Francis lost at Woodrow Wilson High in Long Beach, 25-23, 25-21, 16-25, 25-18, in a nonleague match last Wednesday. Metcalf racked up 32 assists, six digs, and three kills.
The Golden Knights previously picked up a 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-15 Mission League victory at Harvard-Westlake in Studio City as Metcalf racked up 44 assists, 12 digs, four kills, two aces and two blocks. Bender registered 20 kills, 10 blocks and nine digs.
SFHS, which concluded the season as runner-up in league with a 5-1 record (18-6 overall), will host King High of Riverside in its CIF-Southern Section Division II first-round opener today at 6 p.m. If victorious, the Golden Knights would advance to the second round and meet either Dos Pueblos High of Goleta (20-7) or Westlake High of Westlake Village (17-8) on Saturday, April 29.

Flintridge Preps Jake Matsumoto had 22 assists to help the Wolves defeat Providence High in a Prep League match last week

The Wolves defeated visiting Providence High of Burbank, 25-17, 20-25, 25-11, 25-14, in a Prep League match last Wednesday.
Jake Matsumoto racked up 22 assists, Preston Chen registered 16 assists and one kill, and Kerry Ji recorded 14 kills. Zachary Tsai tallied 10 kills, Daniel Choi finished with nine kills and Kyle Yun produced four kills.
Flintridge Prep, which finished the campaign third in league with a 4-4 record (10-14 overall), visited Calabasas for its CIF-Southern Section Division III wildcard opener on Tuesday; the match ended after the Outlook Valley Sun’s press deadline and will be included in next week’s issue. If victorious, the Wolves would advance to the first round at Bishop Montgomery High in Torrance (10-5) today.
