Youth Orchestra to Perform ‘An American in Paris’ on May 21

The Glendale Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Music Director and conductor Henry Shin, will be performing a concert titled “An American in Paris,” featuring works inspired by the theatre, ballet and opera on Sunday, May 21.
Works will include Mozart’s “Magic Flute Overture,” Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Mascagni’s Intermezzo from Cavaliera Rusticana and Gershwin’s “An American In Paris.”
Alongside these works, the Glendale Youth Orchestra will also be featuring two of their recent winners of the annual concerto competition, including violinist Madeline Son of La Cañada Flintridge.
Son will be performing Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, which helped make Spanish themes in music popular. The 15-year-old started playing violin at the age of 6. Under the tutelage of Grace Unhae Kwon, she has won top prizes in numerous competitions. She has been a first-place winner in Southwest Youth Music Festival, Satori String Competition, Southwest Bach Festival and Young Muse International competition. She won the Prodigy Award at Satori at age 11 and was a winner of the Music Teacher Association of California VOCE Competition and two-time Gold Prize winner in International Music and Arts Society competition.
Associate Concertmaster Valerie Chen will be performing the most popular violin concerto of the Romantic era, Violin Concerto No. 2 by Wieniawski.
This concert is sponsored by a grant from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts.
The GYO is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture. The GYO was created by the California Arts Council through the Creative Youth Development Grant.
