In Appreciation of Betty States

I read with sadness of the passing of Betty States in your Sept. 7 issue of the Outlook Valley Sun, but also thankfulness that we knew this wonderful woman.
We had just moved into our new house in La Cañada Flintridge, which had a pool. Although the pool was gated, I was apprehensive that my toddler, Scotty, would get inside. Everyone I talked to said “You’ve got to go to Betty States.”
We met Betty, and she told me that it would be better if I left, and I could stand outside her gate. When I came back in, a very tearful Scotty told me that he didn’t want to come back but said “Betty can still come to my birthday party.” We did come back, and Scotty started looking forward to his lesson and learned how to swim, and Betty did come to his birthday party.
