La Cañada Ends Regular Season on High Note

The La Cañada High School varsity girls’ volleyball team won their nonleague regular-season finale on Oct. 12 over visiting Oaks Christian High of Westlake Village, 25-18, 25-13, 22-25, 26-24.
Junior Ashby Zubchevich racked up 28 kills, 17 digs, four aces and one block, senior Haley Clark contributed 22 kills, 15 digs, four blocks and one ace, and senior Tatum Purdy amassed 51 assists, seven digs and three blocks. Senior Chloe Nussbaum registered 13 digs, four assists, two aces and one kill, while sophomore Vani Tatoulian recorded six blocks and five kills. Freshman Maya Purdy tallied six digs, two kills, one ace and one block, while senior Emma Reed finished with three blocks and one kill. Junior Danica Eggleston tallied two aces, while freshman Luella Lewis chipped in one kill and one block.
The Spartans had their 27-league match win streak snapped on Oct. 10 after being swept by visiting South Pasadena, 27-29, 19-25, 24-26.
Zubchevich finished with 15 kills, 10 digs, one block and one assist, while Clark collected 14 kills, three digs and three assists. Tatum Purdy racked up 29 assists, eight digs, three blocks, two aces and one kill, while Nussbaum was credited with 11 digs, five assists and one ace. Maya Purdy produced nine digs, one kill, one block and one assist, Reed tallied five kills, two blocks and one assist, and Tatoulian registered six blocks, three kills and one dig. Eggleston had two aces and one dig, while Lewis contributed two blocks.
The Spartans (25-11 overall, 7-1 in league) finished as co-champions in the Rio Hondo League and will open the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs as the No. 10-seed. La Cañada will host visiting Bishop Montgomery of Torrance (16-12 overall) in a first-round match on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. If victorious, the Spartans would advance to the second round and meet either No. 7 San Clemente or Santiago High of Corona on Oct. 21.

The Tologs lost their regular season finale to visiting Mayfield Senior in four games, 26-28, 25-23, 25-27, 17-25, in the annual Dig Pink match on Oct. 13.
FSHA senior Mikayla Hsieh racked up 15 kills, 14 digs, two aces, one block and one assist, while senior Luisa Madrigal finished with 17 digs, 13 kills, one ace and one block. Junior Ally Du contributed 18 assists and 12 digs, freshman Allexa Valencia tallied 21 assists and eight digs, and senior Lindsey Du recorded 16 digs, three assists and one ace. Junior Piper Scherbert produced seven kills, five blocks and two digs, while senior Veronica Udell chipped in five kills, four digs and two blocks. Sophomore Grace McCarthy registered six digs, three kills and one ace, while sophomore Alexandra Carr had two digs.
FSHA won a thriller at Louisville High in Woodland Hills in five games, 25-27, 25-23, 17-25, 26-24, 15-11, in an Angeles League match on Oct. 11.
Hsieh tallied 22 kills, 16 digs and one block, Valencia amassed 31 assists, nine digs and two aces, and Lindsey Du racked up 22 digs, six aces and five assists. Carr recorded eight kills and one dig, while Grace McCarthy finished with five kills, four digs, three aces, three blocks and one assist. Udell chipped in three kills, three digs and one block, while Scherbert registered four digs and three kills. Sophomore Grace Savarese was credited with four digs, one kill and one block, while senior Pia Costanzo produced two aces and two digs. Senior Colleen Traver contributed two assists and one kill, while freshman Sophia Wright had three digs.
The Tologs, who finished second in league with a 6-2 record (21-16 overall), will open the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs as the No. 10 seed and will face La Serna High in Whittier (18-15 overall) in a first-round matchup on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. If victorious, Flintridge Sacred Heart would advance to the second round and meet either No. 7 Paloma Valley High of Menifee or Valley Christian High of Cerritos on Oct. 21.

The Wolves lost at Providence High in Burbank in five games, 25-21, 19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 13-15, in their regular season finale on Oct. 11, as Abbie Callaway racked up 20 kills and 14 digs.
Makayla Jones contributed nine kills and one block, Natalia Pradhan and Frankie Callaway each tallied eight kills, and Ashlyn Nam recorded four kills, one ace and one block. Marissa Halley finished with 14 digs and four aces, Jaleen Tseng chipped in 11 digs, and Lucy Liu had two blocks.
Flintridge Prep swept visiting EF Academy of Pasadena, 25-12, 25-9, 25-9, in a nonleague match on Oct. 5, as Maya Itani amassed 37 assists and five aces. Frankie Callaway and Pradhan each recorded seven kills, while Burlingame tallied seven digs.
The Wolves, who finished the regular season tied with Westridge School of Pasadena for third in the Prep League with a 6-6 record (19-8 overall), will open the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs as the No. 6 seed and face Santa Fe High of Santa Fe Springs (14-14 overall) in a first-round matchup on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. If victories, Flintridge Prep would advance to the second round and meet either Cerritos or Culver City on Oct. 21.
