LCHS Wins Yearbook, Magazine Awards

La Cañada High School and LCHS 7/8 received four honors from the American Scholastic Press Association Scholastic Yearbook and Magazine Awards, including first place in the Junior/Senior High Schools Large Schools category for the 2023 Omega yearbook, “The Common Thread.”
The American Scholastic Press Association annually recognizes excellence in yearbook, newspaper and magazine design and publication for achievements in format, content and presentation.
In addition to “Omega’s” award, LCHS’ literary arts magazine, “The Ink” and “The Iris,” also received a first-place designation for its 2023 publication. LCHS 7/8’s “Alpha” yearbook received a second-place designation for its 2023 publication, “Retro. Be Kind, Please Rewind.”
The school’s inaugural issue of its literary arts magazine, “The Sword and the Spear,” was also honored with a second-place award.
“[The Omega and Alpha] yearbooks show a growing knowledge in the fields of writing, photography and page design, and contain elements of memorable yearbooks that will be treasured for years to come,” the 2023 ASPA Yearbook judges said in a statement. “Congratulations to the editors, writers, photographers, layout/graphics designers, staff and adviser who have made this publication possible.”
Of the two magazines submitted, judges said: “Your magazine shows the superior efforts of talented and creative editors, writers, artists, photographers, designers and contributors.”
Established in 1980, the American Scholastic Press Association receives hundreds of submissions annually from secondary schools, colleges and universities across North America. The year 2023 marked the first year that LCHS has submitted any publications to the awards program for consideration. The school offers a wide range of journalism opportunities for students, including two newspapers: LCHS 7/8’s “The Odyssey” and LCHS’ “The Spartan,” which is in its 32nd consecutive year of publication.

First published in the March 7 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.
