La Cañada Presbyterian Church will host a Film Festival featuring documentaries about freedom, health care and education on Wednesdays, starting in November at 6:30 p.m.
Each week of the festival, the church will screen a documentary in its Worship Arts Center, and festival attendees will get the chance to discuss the documentary with people featured in the documentary and/or intimately involved in the film’s subject matter. The festival is free and open to the community.
On Nov. 2, the festival kicks off with the award-winning “Free Burma Rangers” movie. It’s the gripping tale of the 20-year journey of Dave and Karen Eubanks and their work as missionaries on the front lines of the conflicts in Burma, Syria and Iraq. The Eubanks are LCPC global ministry partners and expected to join viewers via Zoom for an update on their family’s outreach in current war zones.
Nov. 9 will feature a documentary on Mercy Ships, the hospital ships on the west coast of Africa. The film provides a tour of their newest ship, the Global Mercy, the world’s largest floating teaching hospital. It also covers the mission of the ship and its volunteer staff and crew to provide life-saving health care free of charge. Steve Schwind, an international hospital chaplain who serves with Mercy Ships and LCPC global ministry partner, will speak via Zoom to discuss the Global Mercy and its mission to bring healing.
The last night of the festival (Nov. 16) will feature a screening of the new Arroyo Seco film, “Can We All Get Along?” The documentary explores the complex history of Pasadena’s schools and the 1970 court order that created the first Federal desegregation plan outside of the South and reflects on its lasting impacts.
Additionally, special guests from LCPC local ministry partners, Harambee and Stars — two Pasadena nonprofits that currently serve students at several schools in the Pasadena Unified School District — will be joined by the filmmaker, Pablo Miralles, for a discussion on the link between the history of Pasadena and the current opportunities in serving students in Pasadena schools.
