LCPC Parent Ed Gala to Honor 2018 Shining Star

Kathy Kovalcik

Kathy Kovalcik has been selected as LCPC Parent Education’s 2018 Shining Star award recipient and will be recognized at the organization’s annual benefit on Saturday, Feb. 24. She “exemplifies Parent Ed’s commitment to strengthening families, both locally and globally, and has had a significant impact on the community, especially its families and children,” according to an event spokesperson.
Kovalcik, a mother of two boys, has been involved in Parent Ed since 1997. Since that time, she has attended numerous classes, served on the volunteer board from 2003 and 2005, and has been a member of the Parent Ed Ministry Support Team (which serves as the program’s advisory board) since 2005. She has also previously served as an LCPC deacon.
In addition to her many commitments with LCPC, Kovalcik has been actively involved in the community as a faithful leader and extraordinary volunteer. She has also been an active member of the Flintridge Guild of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles since 2014, and was the recipient of the prestigious California State PTA Service Award in 2009 and the Continuing Service Award in 2016.
“Kathy is truly one of the most thoughtful and generous people I know. I have known Kathy for 11 years — and have observed her consistently giving and encouraging to those around her. She is like an Angel of Giving,” said Anne Bierling, director of LCPC Parent Ed.
Carol Van Citters, current Parent Ed board chair, also praised Kovalcik. “Kathy is one of the most quietly generous people I have ever met, altruistically on the sidelines always looking for where the need is greatest and quietly taking care to fill the void, never expecting a thing in return. It’s a kind of life ethic with her. She is a rare bird in my book.”
For 39 years, LCPC’s Parent Education Program has maintained its legacy of quality education and reputable staff. The program is supported in part by its annual benefit to be held on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Bowlmor in Pasadena. The event, “Keep Calm and Bowl On” will include dinner, drinks and bowling, as well as an online silent and live auction. The event will be emceed by the Rev. Chuck Osburn and comedian Ron Pearson.
