Living in a Tree City

First published in the April 21 print issue of the Outlook Valley Sun.

I am a resident of the Palm Crest neighborhood and I live across the street from the school. We are in the middle of trying to adjust the plan for the parking lot to save 30-plus mature trees from being cut down. (It’s not looking good.) This is just an observation and please forgive me because I am newer to the area.
I was driving down Baptiste Way for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I had to swerve around at least three trees that were off to the sides of the road. They paved the road around them. I frequently drive down Rosebank Drive near my home, and there is this gorgeous old oak tree right in the middle of the road. You have to drive around this old tree in order to get down the street. It is quirky, and also very charming and unique. Part of what proves that we really are a tree city. It made me laugh that they thought the road wasn’t important enough to chop that tree down. I totally agree! And I don’t think anyone minds driving around it.
It has me wondering … has the value on trees in this area and the focus on preserving them lessened? Is there a reason that I don’t know?
Have you seen landmark or protected trees coming down in your neighborhood?
