Two La Cañada High School varsity wrestlers move on to the stage of the postseason after solid performances last weekend.
Sophie Garcia finished second in the 170-pound division of the CIF Southern Section Girls Individual Northern Regional Qualifying Tournament at Camarillo High School last weekend.
The Spartan finished 2-1 in the tourney and qualified for the CIF-SS Girls Wrestling Championships at Roosevelt High in Corona. She must finish among the top eight in her weight class to advance to the state tournament.
Garcia had byes in the first two rounds and then faced Kaitlyn Post of Simi Valley. The La Cañada standout pinned her opponent and then downed Daniella Dardon-Morales of Palmdale Highland in the semifinals. Garcia was denied a CIF-SS individual crown by Valencia’s America Lopez, who pinned the Spartan to claim first place.
Johnny Vasily traveled to Brea Olinda to compete in the CIF-SS Southern Division Wrestling Championships last weekend and placed sixth in the 170-pound bracket.

Mike LaBroad of Anaheim Canyon. He was defeated by Daniel Cruz of Esperanza High in the quarterfinals but bounced back in the consolation bracket with a pin over Robert Cardenas of Orange El Modena. Vasily followed that with another pin over Downey Warren’s Troy Garza but was then defeated by Armando Gonzales of La Habra Sonora in the consolation semifinal. Vasily took on La Palma Kennedy’s Jonathan Soto in the fifth-place match and fell short in an 11-4 defeat.
Vasily will travel to Norwalk to and be an alternate for the CIF-SS Masters Meet at Cerritos College this weekend.
